Public pressure in Guntersville shuts down proposed Dollar General

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – The public has persuaded city leaders in Guntersville to not build a new Dollar General in the area.

According to WAFF’s newspaper partner, The Advertiser Gleam, last Tuesday the Guntersville Planning Commission elected to not merge three properties along Highway 79 South, across from Cherokee Elementary.

The properties make up 2.6 acres in total and were requested to serve as a new business. Although there was no confirmation by the city of Guntersville, the public consensus pointed to it being a Dollar General.

While at the commission meeting last week residents voiced their concerns over the proposed business.

“There’s nine Dollar Generals within eight miles of where we are right now,” Kenny Shifflett, resident at Hickory Hills, said. “I love this town, we live in a postcard, and I don’t like having Dollar Generals everywhere. That might sound elitist but I don’t care, this is our town.”

The planning commission will hold its next regular session on September 10.
