Pending further permits, the latest Dollar General store in the greater Lake Wallenpaupack area is planned on Route 507 in Tafton.
Palmyra Township (Pike County) Administrator Jo-Ann Rose confirmed that the national chain is planning a store on a vacant lot across from Blue Ridge Lumber (formerly known as Gumble Bros.). She affirmed that the supervisors granted approval for the land use in October 2024, following a conditional use hearing.
“They have not been back in for their Land Development yet, but I do know they have been doing some preliminary testing,” Rose said in an email.
The company needs to file a subdivision and land development plan with the township, as required by ordinance. Among other things, this plan looks at stormwater and drainage control, parking, access roads and utilities.
There were 22 conditions made by the board of supervisors on Oct. 15, as condition to approval. These were set after hearing input from various nearby residents who attended the hearing, Rose said.
Among these conditions are the following required approvals: sewage disposal plan, land development plan, water pump test, traffic lighting plan and signage plan. A traffic study and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation highway occupancy permit are required. A vegetative screening plan is needed to shield the view from private properties on the north and south sides. Business hours shall be limited to 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tractor-trailers can make deliveries only during normal store hours.
The land use was deemed compatible with the community commercial zone, Rose said.
The applicant was JLM Real Estate.
The Palmyra Township Board of Supervisors consists of Chairperson Kenneth Coutts, Eric J. Ehrhardt and Thomas R. Mueller.
The Tafton Dollar General will be about 5.5 miles from the Dollar General in Hawley and 9.4 miles from the Dollar General in Greentown.
Dollar General also has stores in Newfoundland, Hamlin, Arlington, Lakeville, Lake Ariel, Honesdale (Route 6 Mall), Waymart, Beach Lake and Rileyville in Wayne County and Greeley, Shohola, Milford and Dingmans Ferry in Pike County.
