Customers line outside the Taylor Street Dollar General on March 19 to take advantage of the store’s closing sale.

COLUMBIA — A downtown Dollar General is one of nearly 100 nationwide that will close in the coming months.

The store at 1720 Taylor St. is hosting a closing sale, according to banners hung on the storefront on March 19. The store will close for good on April 25.

The chain said it was shuttering 96 stores in the first quarter of 2025, according to a press release.

“While this is less than 1% of our overall store base, those stores, many of which are in urban locations, have become increasingly challenging to successfully operate,” Todd Vasos, Dollar General CEO, said during a March 13 earnings call.

The chain operates over 20,000 stores in 48 states, including approximately 30 in the Columbia area.

“These stores likely would have been closed in the ordinary course of the store’s lifecycle when their leases expired, however, we determined that closing these locations now will allow us to optimize our allocation of resources going forward,” Vasos said.

A Dollar General spokesperson could not provide a list of Columbia area stores slated to close when reached by The Post and Courier.

The company will also close 45 of its pOpshelf stores, according to the release. It was not immediately clear if Columbia’s single pOpshelf on Harbison Boulevard would be impacted.
