BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — New York dairy farmers have their work cut out for them.
With a $1.2 billion investment made to create a Chobani plant in Rome, NY, and another $621 million going to the Great Lakes Cheese Factory in western New York, milk to make those products has to come from somewhere.
When the facility is at full capacity, Chobani will process more than 12 million pounds of milk daily. With New York State being a major dairy producer, this could considerably boost the business.
Congressman Josh Riley (NY-19) shared with 12 News that this is an excellent opportunity for dairy farmers.
“This is a great opportunity for them to have a consistent way to supply their products and make things in upstate New York,” said Rep. Riley. “In fact, we should be making things easier and giving them more opportunities. This expansion with Chobani gives them economic opportunities that are very important.”
Riley added that a refined immigration system needs to be in place to ensure that dairy farmers in Upstate New York have a reliable workforce available year-round.
