If the New York Yankees decide to become sellers at Thursday’s MLB trade deadline, one area on the roster is expected to be the focus of their moves.
According to Andy Martino of SNY, “Rival executives have heard that the Yanks might become willing to talk about relievers on expiring contracts.”
Per Baseball Reference, the list of Yankees relievers who could become free agents after this season includes key pitchers Devin Williams, Luke Weaver and Jonathan Loaisiga.
New York is hoping to make a second straight trip to the World Series, but the team’s recent struggles raise questions about its ability to contend for a title this year. At 56-48, the Yankees lost seven of their last 10 games and now trail the Toronto Blue Jays by 6.5 games for first place in the AL East.
To make matters worse, star slugger Aaron Judge was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right flexor strain in his elbow. His absence could further send New York into a downward spiral.
The Yankees are running out of time before they have to decide whether they want to give up their assets at Thursday’s deadline and build for the future rather than making moves to compete for a title this year.
