Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Stock market, banks, MCX, forex — what is closed today

Several financial market and banking services will remain closed or follow restricted timings today, September 14, as India observes Ganesh Chaturthi. While the NSE and BSE will remain shut for the entire trading day, the commodity market will operate in a limited evening session. Bank branches will also remain closed in several cities.

Stock market holiday today

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE will remain closed on Monday, September 14, for Ganesh Chaturthi. There will be no trading or settlement in the equity, equity derivatives and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments.

The holiday comes after the regular weekend closure on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13. As a result, stock market participants will see three consecutive days without trading.

Trading on the NSE and BSE will resume on the next scheduled trading day.

The remaining stock market holidays in 2026 include Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Prakash Gurpurb on November 24 and Christmas on December 25.

MCX trading timings today

The commodity market will follow a different schedule on Ganesh Chaturthi.

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed during its morning session from 9 am to 5 pm on September 14. Trading will resume in the evening session at 5 pm and continue until 11:30 pm, according to the exchange’s schedule.

The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), however, will remain closed for the entire day.

Forex market closed

The Indian currency derivatives market will also remain closed on Monday, September 14, on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Currency derivatives trading will resume on the next scheduled trading day.

Bank branches closed in several cities

Bank branches in several cities will remain closed today due to Ganesh Chaturthi, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar.

The cities where bank branches will remain closed include Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji and Vijayawada.

The bank holiday follows the weekend closures on September 12, which was the second Saturday of the month, and September 13, Sunday. This makes it an extended break for physical bank branch operations in several parts of the country.

The impact will mainly be on in-person banking services. Digital services such as UPI, mobile banking and internet banking are generally expected to remain available.

Customers who need cash transactions, cheque-related services, document submission or other branch-specific services should check the holiday schedule of their respective bank before visiting a branch.
