Banks in Belarus are littered with old-style banknotes from the Russian Federation.
A woman was refused a large sum of dollars for rubles at Belarusbank. She shared her experience and how she solved the problem on TikTok, Zerkalo writes.
A TikTok user reported that Belarusbank refused to exchange $6,700. She does not know the reason for not accepting them. She only added that “They didn’t like it, it didn’t go through.” Then the woman took the money to another bank, and in the comments she specified that it was BNB-Bank. There, the cashier checked the banknotes under ultraviolet light and said that they were all “clean.”
In the comments, the woman specified that she was from Russia, “came to Belarus, and here they were selling movable and immovable property in dollars.”
Under the video, people shared their experience of exchanging currency for rubles and what they thought about it:
• “They rejected 4,500 dollars at Belarusbank, but they accepted 4,300 at MTBank.”
• “I withdrew money from Belarusbank, took it to another bank, and they wouldn’t accept 6 bills. I went back to Belarusbank. They wouldn’t take it back: “Or maybe you changed it at home.” I screamed at the whole bank, and then they put it on my card.”
• “They also didn’t accept 200 rubles from me. With the proviso [that] they are solvent.”
• “They accepted everything clearly, they accepted euros without any problems.”
• “I recently observed the following occurrence: we bought currency at Belarusbank, but when we needed to return it, they wouldn’t accept it, which means they are selling low-quality currency.”
• “It’s simple. Belarusian banks are flooded with white dollars from the Russian Federation, there’s nowhere to put them, there’s no export like before. The blue dollar, on the other hand, is all flowing into the Russian Federation.” (The white dollar is the old-style bill, the blue dollar is the new one — editorial note).
• “This applies to the old-style bills. They actually examine them almost under a microscope. They didn’t even check the new ones.”
• “I handed the money in the other day too, one of my bills had a blue stamp on it, and the other one had light gray spots, they took it without even asking any questions.”
• “They didn’t take mine at Belarusbank either. I handed it in at another one. They took it.”
• “I buy euros at Belgazprombank, the cashier asks if I’m going abroad or to Belarus. I say abroad, and she says, “Okay then.” And she hands me the money. I asked what was the matter, and she said that Belarusbank would not accept it for exchange.”
