Bessent plans to emphasize the dollar’s key role in the world and talk up Trump’s approach to trade policy, according to excerpts of his prepared remarks released by Trump’s transition team. He’s due to say American officials “must ensure that the U.S. dollar remains the world’s reserve currency,” as well as praise Trump as “the first president in modern times to recognize the need to change our trade policy and stand up for American workers.”
In addition, the Treasury nominee plans to say Trump has “a generational opportunity to unleash a new economic golden age” and call for securing “supply chains that are vulnerable to strategic competitors.” He’ll also say Americans will face a “crushing $4 trillion tax hike” if the GOP’s 2017 cuts aren’t extended and stress that U.S. officials must prioritize “productive investment that grows the economy” over “wasteful spending that drives inflation.”
