A controversial figure on social media Kojo Onipayede, popularly known as Kojo Forex, launched a defamation case against Albert Nathaniel Hyde, better known by his stage name Bongo Ideas, putting him in legal hot water. Kojo Forex accused Bongo Ideas of libel in an amended statement of claim submitted to the court on May 17, 2023. Kojo Forex requested one million Ghana cedis (GH₵1,000,000) in damages in the lawsuit. On January 28, 2025, Justice Forson Agyapong Baah of the Accra High Court Jurisdiction 2 rendered a decision following a consideration of the evidence. In addition to GH₵100,000 in general damages, the court also granted Kojo Forex GH₵50,000 in exemplary, compensatory, and aggravated damages. The defendant was also mandated to pay GH₵20,000 in legal fees.
The plaintiff received a number of other reliefs from the court in addition to the monetary damages. Within 21 days of the ruling, Bongo Ideas was required to withdraw the defamatory remarks from his Twitter feed and issue a public apology. A permanent injunction prohibiting Bongo Ideas from posting or making any more defamatory remarks against Kojo Forex was also imposed by the court. For Bongo Ideas, who has frequently been a contentious character on social media, this decision represents a serious legal setback.
