DGX at Sibley Square closes: Community reaction
Dollar General is shutting down its DGX store in downtown Rochester’s Sibley Building, leaving residents who depended on it for affordable groceries without a convenient option.
Dollar General stores are next on the retail chopping block. According to the company’s fourth quarter earnings report released this month, Dollar General announced it’s planning to close 96 Dollar General stores and 45 Popshelf stores during the first quarter of 2025. Another six Popshelf stores will be converted into Dollar General stores.
“As we look to build on the substantial progress we made on our Back to Basics work in fiscal 2024, we believe this review was appropriate to further strengthen the foundation of our business,” Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer, said in the report. “While the number of closings represents less than one percent of our overall store base, we believe this decision better positions us to serve our customers and communities.”
According to Dollar General’s website, the company operates more than 20,000 Dollar General, DG Market, DGX and Popshelf stores in 48 states.

In 2021, Dollar General announced plans to open approximately 1,000 Popshelf stores by the end of the 2025 fiscal year due to its popularity with customers, according to reporting from CNBC.
Popshelf’s website says the chain has more than 220 locations in 21 states, however after the 45 planned closures, the chain will have about 175 remaining stores. There are no Popshelf locations in New York.
