Dollar Tree fight in Bishopville ends in crash, 5 arrests on Sunday

A Dollar Tree fight outside Bishopville escalated into a car crash, injuries, and charges, including attempted murder, for a 17-year-old suspect.

LEE COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have released new details in a fight that escalated into a car crashing into a Bishopville area store, leading to multiple arrests and an attempted murder charge.

Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon said deputies were called to the Dollar Tree at 618 Sumter Highway outside Bishopville around 2 p.m. regarding a fight in the parking lot involving two adults and three juveniles. The sheriff’s office said that, at some point during the dispute, a juvenile suspect got into a car and hit another juvenile suspect. The vehicle then rolled away from the store and crashed into another occupied vehicle in the parking lot.

Authorities said the person struck by the vehicle sustained injuries that weren’t expected to be life-threatening. However, the crash also damaged the storefront and caused structural damage. As a result, authorities said the store will be closed for the day.

Investigators have since charged 19-year-old Celvin Hickman of Bishopville with disorderly conduct and malicious injury to property and 24-year-old Shamirah Blyther of Bishopville with disorderly conduct. Two juveniles were also charged with disorderly conduct and released to their legal guardians.

A third juvenile suspect has been charged with disorderly conduct, malicious injury to property totaling $10,000 or more, malicious injury to property totaling $2,000 or less, and attempted murder. In Sunday night’s update, the sheriff’s office said the suspect is 17 but is being charged as an adult and held at the Sumter-Lee Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

The sheriff’s office said this is due to a 2016 law that requires a juvenile who is 17 years old to be charged as an adult for certain offenses.
