‘Whose age is it competing with?’ Oppn targets Modi govt as rupee slips below 90 per US dollar

As India woke up to the Rupee slipping past 90 against the US dollar in yet another low for the Indian currency, the Opposition has demanded answers from the Modi government, asking it to take stock of the “financial situation” it reflects.

While the government has not addressed the fall yet, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in November remarked that the significant depreciation of rupee — even though it had not hit 90 at the time — should not be viewed as the Indian currency weakening but dollar strengthening.

Congress MP Manish Tewari took a dig at the Modi government, asking whose age is it competing with now? “It is very ironic that when the Rupee was less than 60, they would talk about the age of Dr Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, but now the Rupee has reached 90, whose age is it competing with now?” Tewari asked.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told reporters to direct questions about the rupee’s depreciation to the government and not the Opposition. In a thinly veiled jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she suggested that people revisit what was said of the UPA government when it was in power and the rupee hit a record low of 60.53 against US dollar.

“What did they use to say when the dollar value was high during the Manmohan Singh government? What is their response today? Ask them. Why are you asking me?”

Another Congress leader, Salman Khurshid said the fall reflects the impact of US sanctions and tariffs and that India should play to its strength and resolve trade issues with the US.

“We should consider our strengths. If the rupee is falling in value vis-a-vis the US dollar, why is this happening? Everyone knew that the consequences of the US’s attitude towards us of imposing sanctions and tariffs would be felt somewhere. Its consequences are being seen in the rupee’s value. This is a long-standing issue, and if it is resolved, the rupee will recover,” Salman Khurshid told ANI.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president, blamed government schemes for the rupee fall.

“The Indian rupee is sliding because of the government’s schemes. It reflects our financial situation at the global level,” he told PTI. “No matter what we say, there is no value for the rupee in the world today.”

Regarding PM Modi’s private dinner with Russian President Putin, the Congress leader also suggested that India see its own benefit in trade decisions and not be influenced by other countries.
