Karen B. Moore is Founder and CEO of Moore, a nationally ranked integrated communications and public affairs firm.
As an agency CEO, I have always believed in the power of community investment. It is not just about doing business; it is about making a positive impact where we work and live. This belief has driven me to challenge myself and my agency’s leadership team to commit to our communities in meaningful ways.
I believe that finding ways to invest in the community is crucial for both leaders and employees within a business. It cultivates a sense of responsibility and connection within the company and strengthens the work you do each and every day. There is nothing more special than sharing your passions and philanthropic efforts with those you collaborate with.
At my agency, community investment means dedicating time and resources to support local initiatives. Through our “Moore Impact” program, we encourage each member of our team to spend four hours of compensated time per month supporting an organization of their choosing, preferably through service on at least one community board. This commitment is not just a corporate responsibility; it is a personal one. I believe that if you and your firm are successful, you have an obligation to help others achieve success as well.
Aligning With Personal Passions
Community investment should be more than just a duty; it should be a passion. My passions include higher education, economic development, veterans services, and healthcare access and affordability. My agency’s leaders are equally dedicated to various causes, such as stopping human trafficking, addressing child poverty, and supporting the arts and animal welfare. These diverse interests enrich our community involvement and ensure that we are making a broad impact.
One question I often hear is, “Won’t this add to my already full plate?” My answer is simple: You can and should set an example for corporate responsibility to your community. Experience has shown me that investing time in community service can lead to expanding your network and opportunities for your business. Not to mention there is always a chance for growth in skill sets such as project management, public speaking and other relevant skills for all career levels. My agency’s confidential employee surveys reveal that the opportunity to spend time out of the office doing good in the community is one of the top reasons our employees love working with us.
Begin With Personal Community Involvement
If you are inspired to get involved personally, here are my tips for getting started:
• Identify three areas of community involvement that align with your interests.
• Create a one-page bio reflecting your passions, expertise and experience.
• Identify two or three boards whose missions align with your passions.
• Contact those organizations to express your interest in serving and inquire about upcoming vacancies.
• Always consider being an active and involved volunteer before joining a board.
How To Make Your Own Annual Commitment
Every year, my firm assesses our commitment to community participation and investment. In 2024, we dedicated thousands of hours of service to various community initiatives and organizations, including a local elementary school. Our efforts included monthly classroom visits, holiday parties for entire grades and most recently, working with community partners and foundations to gift college scholarships to six kindergarteners.
To make your own lasting impact, consider creating an annual commitment to your local community. Here are some ways to get started:
• Assess your personal and professional goals and how they align with community service.
• Identify organizations across your city that encourage corporate involvement in volunteering and resource donations.
• Allow team members to share how they serve their community currently and learn how your team may be able to expand upon that.
• Dedicate hours within your working days to allow employees to volunteer their time and resources to organizations that are close to their hearts.
• Regularly review and adjust your commitment to ensure it remains meaningful and impactful.
Success is measured not just by financial performance but by the positive impact we make in our communities. By dedicating time and resources to causes you and your team members care about, you not only help others succeed but also enrich your own lives and work experiences. I encourage everyone to find their passion and have influence. Together, we can create better, more supportive communities for all.
