SCARBOROUGH (WGME) – The Scarborough town council had a large turnout Wednesday night as residents voiced their concerns over growth, with one town leader saying he wasn’t used to speaking to so many people.
On the docket was more than $140 million in investments in schools.
These investments would be to accommodate new students who are expected due to housing expansions.
People attending the meeting talked about how they were afraid these investments would affect their town, and their tax dollars.
“With up to 375 new housing units, and no detail on bedrooms, we could see many new students,” Scarborough resident Denise Hamilton said. “And at $20,000 to $21,000 per child, per year, that cost falls directly on the taxpayers. Again, not fair.”
The town council voted to send the investments to a referendum.
If passed, it will cost the taxpayers an estimated $416 per year.
