Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called for a ban on lawmakers owning stock and pointed out “hypocrisy” on her side of the aisle on the issue.
On this week’s The Weekly Show, Ocasio-Cortez joined Jon Stewart and touched on a number of topics including President Donald Trump and needing more Democrats to “talk the talk and walk the walk.”
“There needs to be Democrats who walk the walk and talk the talk. There is an insane amount of hypocrisy, and the hypocrisy is what gets exploited to use the cynicism and wherever there’s a hypocritical window. For example, I think one of the most biggest examples of this is insider trading in Congress,” Ocasio-Cortez said, with Stewart excitedly agreeing and offering “snaps” in support of the New York lawmaker.
There have been calls for a ban on lawmakers trading stock and representatives like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) have been the target of criticism over the trading done by them or their families.
“It’s so crazy. I mean, like, it’s the end of the thing. Like, people think that every day people are stupid. I’m like, ‘do you all really think that people don’t see this shit?’” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Stewart argued lawmakers have far more insider information thanks to their committee positions and that insider knowledge directly feeds their trading and makes their portfolios “explode.”
“You run the casino!” he said.
“And then we’re supposed to act like money only corrupts Republicans?” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Give me a fucking break!”
