Daylight saving time and Halloween are often front-of-mind in October, but Columbus Day 2025 is Monday, Oct. 13, a federal holiday that shuts down federal offices, banks and post offices, but it’s not entirely a stock market holiday.

President Donald Trump issued a proclamation Wednesday, Oct. 9, celebrating Italian explorer Christopher Columbus as “the original American hero,” while accusing critics of “vicious and merciless” slander, USA TODAY reported.

Columbus Day has been a federal holiday since 1892, marked as the second Monday in October. But some states and cities celebrate the date as Indigenous Peoples Day, citing Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ use of violence of slavery against the native people he encountered when he reached the Americas in 1492.

Despite the controversy, Columbus Day has never disappeared from the federal list of holidays, and many places will close, or stay open on Oct. 13. Here’s what to know about the stock market.
