The cornerback depth chart has been a spot of contention for the Minnesota Vikings so far this offseason, and now the team is trading a player who couldn’t quite find his way for the purple. In return, they’ll be getting a cornerback who kind of followed the same path for his former team.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network (among others), the Vikings are sending cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for cornerback Nahshon Wright. The deal will go through pending both players passing a physical.
Booth was a second-round pick of the Vikings out of Maryland in the 2022 NFL Draft. He had a pretty disastrous rookie season and dealt with some injury issues but appeared to get a bit better when pressed into duty towards the end of last season. However, it’s safe to say that he did not live up to the expectations that the team had for him when he was drafted, and now he’ll get a new start in Dallas with new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
Wright was the Cowboys’ third-round pick in 2021 out of Oregon State. He’s a very tall corner, measuring in at 6’4”, and has appeared in 32 games for the Cowboys over the past three seasons with just three starts. He is also the cousin of current Vikings’ cornerback Mekhi Blackmon, whose torn ACL is one of the issues that the team has had to deal with this preseason at that spot.
At first blush, this appears to be a win for the Vikings as Wright seems to be a better player than Booth at this point in time. Obviously, we’ll have to see how it plays out over the long term but it seems promising for the Vikings for now. No word on whether or not Wright will be available for the Vikings when they host the Las Vegas Raiders in the team’s preseason opener tomorrow afternoon.
