Crypto Thefts Surge Above USD 2.17 Billion in 2025: A Digital Currency Crisis

The escalating cyber threat in the realm of digital currency has caused crypto thefts to breach an alarming USD 2.17 billion in 2025. This crisis was further underscored by the recent USD 44 million hack of the Indian cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX.

According to Chainalysis’ mid-year update on crypto crime, the thefts this year have already outstripped those of 2024, deemed one of the worst years on record. The ByBit exchange suffered a USD 1.5 billion breach, marking it as the single largest theft in the history of cryptocurrency.

Regions such as Eastern Europe and MENA have witnessed substantial growth in victim numbers. Notably, state-sponsored entities are behind the bulk of these sophisticated attacks, indicating a strategic shift in focus from individual wallets to service providers.
