USD eliminated from NCAA volleyball tournament; Mesa moves on


Kansas State rallied from a 2-1 deficit Friday afternoon to eliminate the University of San Diego in a first-round match of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament at Lincoln, Neb.

The loss ended an 18-match winning streak for the 25-5 Toreros, who completed an undefeated West Coast Conference season last week.

USD took a 2-1 lead by 25-21, 17-25, 28-26 scores in Friday’s first three games. But the Wildcats won the fourth game 25-22 to even the match at 2-2 and prevailed 15-12 in the tiebreaker.

WCC Player of the Year Nemo Beach paced the Toreros with 26 points on 22 kills and 12 digs. All-WCC pick Isabel Clark had 20 kills and five digs. WCC Setter of the Year Kylie Munday had 55 assists and seven digs. And WCC Libero of the Year Olivia Bennett had 25 digs.

Mesa advances to semifinals

San Diego Mesa College defeated Fresno City College 3-1 on Friday afternoon in Folsom to advance to the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association women’s volleyball championships.

Mesa (30-1) will face Santa Monica College (27-4) Saturday at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing to Sunday afternoon’s state championship match.

Mesa, which has won 27 straight matches, defeated Fresno by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 26-24. Mia Lundberg led the Olympians with 24 kills and 12 digs. Bella Town (Carlsbad High) had 10 kills and six digs. Ruby Ennis (Lakeside) had 44 assists and 12 digs. Eva Luna (University City High) had 15 digs.

Mesa College defeated Pacific Coast Athletic Conference rival Miramar College (23-8) 3-0 to reach the state quarterfinals. Palomar College (19-8) also lost in the Sweet 16.
