Back in 2021, Dollar Tree announced it was moving away from its $1 price point, raising prices by 25% and introducing items priced at $3 and $5, per CNN. In 2024, the company raised prices again, setting a new minimum of $1.50 and pricing some items as high as $7, as reported by Clarion Ledger.

Retirees on a fixed income feel these changes the most. However, even with higher prices, here are some everyday items at Dollar Tree that are still worth buying.

Big-Roll Paper Towels

Even though Dollar Tree’s two-ply big-roll paper towels aren’t $1.25, they’re still a good buy. The single rolls are also especially convenient for retirees who don’t need to buy a huge pack of paper towels.

Gain Boost Liquid Laundry Detergent

Retirees who are single or no longer have children at home don’t need as much laundry detergent on hand as before. Dollar Tree sells a 10-ounce bottle of Gain boost liquid laundry detergent, which equals 15 cents per ounce. Plus, the 10-ounce size is perfect for those who don’t want to handle a large bottle of detergent when shopping or doing laundry.

Poo-Pourri is a great product, but it’s at least $1.80 per ounce at Walmart — not a good buy for retirees on a budget. Dollar Tree’s floral-scented stinky bowl spray has a five-star rating from shoppers and costs 26 cents per ounce. That’s an 86% savings.

Even though prices are up on household cleaning supplies, retirees know they can save at Dollar Tree. The cheapest foaming bath spray with bleach at Walmart is around 13 cents per ounce. Comet classic foaming bleach bathroom cleaner beats that price at around 6 cents per ounce.

Gift Bags

The prices on gift bags at Dollar Tree are hard to beat, which makes them a great buy for retirees. The store sells a variety of these in different colors, prints and sizes. It even stocks medium-size gift bags in two-piece packs, which lowers the price per bag even more.

Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
