Tamil Nadu CM Vijay visits UK to promote investment, study Silverstone

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has commenced a week-long official visit to the United Kingdom, leading a high-level delegation tasked with attracting global investments and expanding key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, electronics, and Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

The initiative aims to generate significant employment and advance the state government’s goal to position Tamil Nadu as Asia’s premier investment-friendly region. This visit follows notable progress within the first 100 days of Vijay’s administration, which secured Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) valued at over Rs 1 lakh crore during the Vetri Tamil Nadu Investors’ Conference 2026.

Investment proposals from multinational companies across Europe amount to approximately Rs 8,491 crore and are expected to create around 5,690 jobs, underscoring growing investor confidence in Tamil Nadu. The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), effective from July 15, 2026, has further enhanced these efforts, with Tamil Nadu among the leading states implementing the agreement, including dispatching export consignments from Chennai on its first day.

Tamil Nadu’s robust industrial base across manufacturing and services sectors—including textiles, garments, leather, footwear, automobile components, engineering goods, and electronics—is well positioned to capitalise on UK market opportunities. The agreement also facilitates joint ventures and technological collaboration.

UK companies have maintained a substantial presence in Tamil Nadu for decades, particularly in engineering, financial services, and technology, establishing manufacturing units and GCCs within the state.

Under Rule 110 of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay announced plans to establish a world-class ‘Motor Sports City’ in the state, leveraging Tamil Nadu’s strong automobile and electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem. To advance this project, the delegation will study global motorsport infrastructure, beginning with a visit to the Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit. This visit will provide insights into circuit design, safety systems, operational best practices, and commercial strategies, while exploring opportunities in motorsports infrastructure, sports tourism, and specialised automobile industries linked to the sector.

The delegation includes Minister for Public Works and Sports Development Thiru Aadhav Arjuna, Member Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority (SDAT) Thiru Meghnath Reddy, IAS, Managing Director and CEO of Guidance Thiru Deepak Jacob, IAS, and other government officials. The group departed Chennai on September 10, 2026, and will return on September 17.
